Welcome to the Texas Hot Flashes Website!
The Texas Hot Flashes is a group of four lampwork artists who have uniquely different styles but the same common desire to achieve the utmost satisfaction while creating art. We combine our unique identities and styles to sell and show our works at various trunk shows and events throughout the year for your enjoyment.
Many people think of lampworking as glassblowing. However, the term “Lampworking” was coined during the time when small amounts of glass were worked over oil and wax lamps. It is also known as “flameworking” or “torchworking”, as the modern practice no longer uses oil-fueled lamps. There is evidence that glass beads have been made for over 5000 years in Syria. Evidence also points to glass beads being made on copper mandrels as early as 2000+ years BC. Lampwork became widely practiced in Murano, Italy in the 14th century. In the 19th century lampwork techniques were use in the production of paperweights primarily in France.
Lampworking differs from glassblowing in that glassblowing uses a blowpipe to inflate a gather of molten glass thereby inflating it by blowing air into the blowpipe, whereas lampworking manipulates glass either by the use of tools, gravity, or by blowing directly into the end of a glass tube. Early lampworking was done in the flame of an oil lamp, with the artist blowing air into the flame through a pipe to increase the heat. Most of the artists today use torches that burn either propane or natural gas or, in some countries, for the fuel gas, with either tanked oxygen or oxygen produced by a oxygen concentrator. Once the glass is molten it is shaped with tools and gravity.
